Our Team
All our music therapists are Board Certified which requires:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy
2. 1200 supervised clinical hours of client hours
3. Taking and passing the Board Exam
4. Maintaining the certification by receiving 100 educational training hours every 5 year cycle
5. Maintaining Utah State Certification
Heather T. Overly, SCMT, MT-BC, has practiced music therapy for 20 years since earning her BS in Music Therapy from Utah State University in 2001. Board Certified since graduation, she completed a 6-month internship at Sunshine Terrace under Jennifer Birchell’s direction. Heather owns Overlymusical LLC, serving diverse clients including adults with addictions, teens with mental health challenges, elderly in retirement communities, hospice patients, and individuals with neurodiversity. Additionally, she teaches music development classes for parents and children aged 0-5 and group guitar for teens and adults. Passionate about the healing power of music, Heather resides in Cache Valley with her husband Devin and their four children.
Taylor Niebergall, SCMT, MT-BC -Taylor Graduated from USU with a BS in Music Therapy in 2018 and completed an internship at the Hartvigsen school for disabled children in 2019. She has a deep love and appreciation for music and for people. Taylor plays the guitar, piano, and flute, but her favorite instrument is her voice. She is very excited to start working again while continuing to help her husband raise their two young sons.
Mami Matsumoto Lyon, SCMT, MT-BC Mami received her BS in Music Therapy at Utah State University in 2011 and completed an internship at Sunshine Terrace in Logan. She served various clients as a music therapist at Terrace Grove Assisted Living in Logan and Fogerty Music Therapy in Bloomington, Indiana. She loves teaching music and shares her love of music. She sings, plays the violin, guitar, and piano. She has a husband and is a mother of two sons. She enjoys Zumba, gardening, and cooking.
Kienna Parkin-Choi, SCMT, MT-BC
Kienna received her BS degrees in Music Therapy and Psychology in 2022 from Utah State University. She completed an internship at Blue Ridge Hospice in Virginia and received her credential shortly after. Kienna’s main instrument is guitar but she started learning the violin at 5 years old and was encouraged to pursue music by her music teacher mother. She’s excited to continue to work with hospice patients through Overlymusical, LLC, in the Salt Lake area where she lives with her husband. Kienna also loves practicing Taekwondo, learning Korean, and embroidering.
Abby Maughan-Cheney, SCMT, MT-BC
Abby completed her internship with OverlyMusical in July of 2023 and is happy to be back on the team! She grew up in Cache Valley and graduated from USU in 2022 with a BS in music therapy and a psychology minor. She grew up playing the piano, and loves singing and playing the guitar. She truly believes in music’s ability to connect, heal, and support people of all ages and circumstances. She is married with one beautiful daughter, and loves watching movies and spending time outside.
Rheannon Longhurst, MT-BC.
Rheannon is so happy to be a part of the Overly Musical team! She finished her internship with Overlymusical in Jan 2024 and immediately was hired on. Her main instrument is voice and she loves singing loud for all to hear! Rheannon grew up in Salt Lake and now lives in Cache Valley with her family. When she’s not singing or playing an instrument, you can usually find her reading a good book or chasing her toddler.
Music Therapy Interns
Music Therapy interns are with Overlymusical, LLC for 6 months then they are qualified to sit for the Board Certification Exam. In order to qualify to be an intern, students must have a Bachelors of Music Therapy from a certified University.
Bailey Nall attended Texas Woman’s University where she received her BS in Music Therapy and a minor in Health Psychology. Bailey’s primary instrument is clarinet, but she enjoys playing guitar and ukulele. Bailey believes music is healing and a useful form of expression. She is grateful for the opportunity to serve a variety of populations, grow in her musical and therapeutic skills, and learn from the team at Overlymusical, LLC during internship. When not making music, you can find Bailey outside hiking, skiing, or paddleboarding, or on a plane ready for the next adventure!
Hannah Hakes is a native of Arizona and completed her music therapy course work at Utah State University. When not doing music she enjoys being in nature, reading, paddle boarding and hanging out with her goldendoodle.
